Title: Regulating the Use of Corporal Punishment in Schools

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that allows parents to exempt their children from corporal punishment, requires a school official to attempt to notify a parent before carrying out corporal punishment, and mandates that local school boards report their usage of corporal punishment each year.

Highlights:
-Prohibits corporal punishment from being administered on a student if a written statement from his parent or guardian opposing such punishment is on file in the school, and requires schools to provide a form at the beginning of the school year through which parents and guardians can make their preference known (Sec. 1). -Requires a school official to make a reasonable attempt to notify a student's parent or guardian before carrying out corporal punishment (Sec. 1). -Requires each local board of education to submit an annual report to the State Board of Education, including the number of times corporal punishment was administered, and the grade, age, gender, race, and disability status of the students to whom it was administered (Sec. 1).
