Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that allows same-sex couples to marry with equal protection under the law with different-sex couples, and excuses members of the clergy from being required to perform marriage ceremonies.

Highlights:
-Recognizes marriages regardless of sex, and grants same-sex couples the same protections, responsibilities, rights, obligations, and benefits possessed by different-sex couples (Sec. 1). -Provides that no marriage license shall be denied on account of the sex of the parties involved (Sec. 3). -Establishes that clergymen, ministers and Society for Ethical Culture leaders shall not be required to solemnize any marriage (Sec. 4).
