Title: Permitting Elections in Smaller Municipalities on Allowing Alcohol

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to override a veto of a bill that allows towns located in dry counties to hold referendums on allowing the sale of liquor in their towns.

Highlights:
-Allows municipalities with 1,000 or more people (with exception of Clay, Randolph, and Blount Counties) to alter their status as dry or wet by means of a municipal option election (Sec. 1). -Requires each dry/wet election to be preceded by a petition signed by 30% of the residents who voted in the most recent general election (Sec. 1). -Outlines requirements to obtain a license for the sale of alcoholic beverages and gives guidelines for retention of the license (Sec. 2). -Requires beer sold by a licensed establishment (except keg beer) to be sold in bottles, cans or other containers not to exceed one pint or 16 ounces (Sec. 2).
