Title: Microstamping Requirement for Semiautomatic Pistols

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires all semiautomatic pistols delivered to firearms dealers on or after January 1, 2011 to be "microstamp-ready," meaning manufactured to produce a unique alpha-numeric or geometric code on at least 2 locations on each expended cartridge case that identifies the make, model, and serial number of the pistol.

Highlights:

-Prohibits the defacing or altering of a microstamp-ready semiautomatic pistol for the purpose of preventing law enforcement from identifying the unique alpha-numeric or geometric code associated with that pistol, and specifies that the replacing of a firing pin that has been damaged or in need of replacement does not qualify as defacing or altering the firearm (Sec. 6). -Prohibits firearms dealers from selling microstamp-ready semiautomatic pistols acquired legally from non-dealers if the pistol has been defaced or altered (Sec. 6). -Specifies that a violation of the microstamping requirement is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, 1 year imprisonment, or both, for each violation (Sec. 6).
