Title: English as the Official Language of Georgia

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a resolution that amends the Georgia state constitution making English the official language of the state for all public affairs.

Highlights:

- Requires the state to present any official views and actions in English [sec. 1 (b) (2)]. - Requires that laws, programs, and policies of the state, including the administration of driver's license examinations, and all other such documents be written in English [sec. 1 (b) (3)]. - Enables the state and other political subdivisions to use languages other than English for specific educational, public health, security, legal, diplomatic, and private purposes [sec. 1 (c-d)]. - Authorizes residents, or those doing business in Georgia, to sue any agency or official of the state that violates this law [sec. 1 (e)]. - This is a substitute bill offered by the House Judiciary Committee.

NOTE: THIS IS A SUBSTITUTE BILL, MEANING THE LANGUAGE OF THE ORIGINAL BILL HAS BEEN REPLACED. THE DEGREE TO WHICH THE SUBSTITUTE BILL TEXT DIFFERS FROM THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE TEXT CAN VARY GREATLY.

NOTE: AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION REQUIRES TWO-THIRDS APPROVAL IN EACH CHAMBER FOR PASSAGE. IT MUST THEN BE APPROVED BY A MAJORITY OF CITIZENS VOTING IN THE NEXT ELECTION TO BE ENACTED.
