Title: Expanding Immigration Enforcement

Vote to pass a bill that expands the powers of local law enforcement to enforce immigration law and applies additional immigration restrictions.

Highlights:

Transportation includes transporting unlawful aliens into the state or for a distance of greater than 100 miles within the state [sec. 10 (2-3)]. - Requires public employers and contractors, including trade unions, looking to contract with public employers to register with an authorized verification system to verify the employment authorization status of new employees [sec. 6 (2-3)]. - Prohibits employers from replacing an employee who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien with an unauthorized alien [sec. 6 (4)]. - Requires a lawful presence in the United States to obtain a liquor license or a private club license [sec. 2 (7) & sec. 3 (7)]. - Exempts verification of legal presence requirements for the following services: emergency medical care, short-term, non-cash disaster relief, immunization efforts, and social services like soup kitchens and short-term shelters [sec. 7 (3) (b-e)]. - Establishes the effective date of this bill as July 1, 2009 (Sec. 11). - This is a substitute bill offered by Senator John Hickman. - House Floor Amendment 9 was sponsored by Representative Kay McIff supplementing the additional restrictions against the transportation of unlawful aliens.
