Vote to pass a bill that would institute procedures for the introduction of generic drugs into the prescription drug market and would also allow importation of prescription drugs from Canada into the United States.

Highlights:

• Grants brand-name drug companies one 30-month extension of the right to exclusive sales if the Food & Drug Administration approves a competitor's generic drug patent.

• Authorizes the Secretary of Health and Human Services to permit pharmacists and wholesalers to import prescription drugs from Canada into the United States.

• Requires Canadian importers and wholesalers to register with the Department of Health and Human Services.

• Authorizes individuals to import drugs from Canada, provided that the prescriptions they acquire are for individual use and do not exceed a 90 day dosage.
