Title: Republic of Congo Elections
Vote to pass a bill expressing the concern of Congress over the recent violence in the Republic of Congo and its effect on the upcoming Congolese elections.
- Calls for a lasting ceasefire between warring factions so that humanitarian needs can begin to be addressed.
- Urges all private militia to disarm and disband immediately.
- Approves of the deployment of African peacekeeping forces to the region, if deemed necessary.
- Commends the leaders from Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Senegal for their efforts in the resolution of this conflict and encourages their further concern and involvement in the matter.
- Requests that the Government of the Republic of Congo plan for and hold the previously-scheduled elections at the earliest possible date, and do so in an open and transparent manner.
- Promotes the involvement of the United States in providing election-related technical assistance if requested by the Government of the Republic of Congo.
