Vote to adopt a conference report that calls for $32.9 billion in appropriations for the Departments of Commerce, Justice, State, and related agencies for fiscal year1998.
- Prohibits use of funds for the statistical sampling in connection with any official year 2000 census taking.
- Allows the provision known as 245 (i) to expire, allowing any illegal immigrant in the United States who submits an application by January 14, 1998 to obtain a visa within the U.S.
- Stipulates that future permanent resident alien visas will be issued only in an immigrant’s home country.
- $17.54 billion for the Department of Justice, including $ 2.34 billion for the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS).
- $4.79 billion for the Department of Commerce, including $543.72 million for the Census Bureau.
- $4.08 billion for the State Department.
- $3.29 billion for the Judiciary.
