Title: Family & Medical Leave Bill
Vote Smart's Synopsis:
Vote to pass a bill that allows eligible employees to take up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during a 12 month period due to the birth or adoption of a child, a serious health condition of a family member or his or her own serious health condition.
Highlights:
- Defines an eligible employee as an individual who has worked for his or her employer for at least 12 months and at least 1,250 hours before taking such a leave
- Exempts employers with less than 50 employees from leave requirements
- Requires an employee to give 30 days notice for any leave that is predictable, such as a birth
- Allows the employer to request certification of a health issue that is the reason for the leave
- Requires that the employee is allowed to return to an equivalent position after returning from leave
- Exempts an employee who is among the highest 10 percent of paid employees from the right to be returned to an equivalent position
- Allows an employee to maintain coverage under a "group health plan" during his or her leave
- Makes employers who fail to comply with this Act liable to the employee who sought leave
- Expresses the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should conduct a review of the current policy on homosexuals in the Armed Forces and report the results by July 15, 1993 to Congress and the President
