A vote to pass a bill that increases penalties for committing violent acts against police officers, firefighters, emergency responders, and members of the Mississippi Army or Air National Guard, effective July 1, 2017.
Specifies that killing an emergency medical technician, first responder, fireman, utility worker, or peace officer while such individual is acting in their official capacity is considered capital murder (Sec. 2).
Increases punishment for individuals convicted and sentenced for murder or capital murder of a peace officer, emergency medical technician, or first responder acting in their official capacity shall be punished by a term or fine 3 times that authorized by law (Sec. 4).
Defines “peace officer” to include members of the Mississippi Army or Air National Guard (Sec. 2).
Classifies the killing emergency medical technicians, first responders, firemen, utility workers, or peace officers as carrying a sentence of imprisonment for life without parole (Sec. 3).
