Vote to concur with House amendments and pass a bill that prohibits employers from refusing to allow an established employee to take up to 6 weeks of parental leave, effective January 1, 2018.

Highlights:

 

  • Prohibits employers from refusing an employee with more than 12 months and 1,250 hours of service during the previous 12-month period to request up to 6 weeks of parental leave for the purpose of bonding with a new child within one year of the child’s birth, adoption, or foster care placement (Sec. 1).

  • Prohibits employers from refusing to maintain pay or coverage under a group health plan for an employee who takes parental leave (Sec. 1).

  • Authorizes an employee to take sick leave or vacation leave for the purpose of parental care or bonding (Sec. 1).

  • Specifies that if two or more caretakers of the child in question work for the same employer, the employer is not required, but may elect or negotiate, to grant simultaneous leave to both employees, with the stipulation that (Sec. 1):

    • The employer is required to grant leave at separate times if it is requested;

    • The minimum duration of leave shall be 2 weeks.
