Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the State Board of Education from implementing Common Core academic standards and assessments.

Highlights:

• Prohibits the State Board of Education from implementing Common Core academic standards and assessments (Sec. 1).

• Establishes guidelines for new education standards, including but not limited to, the following guidelines (Sec. 1):
• Standards are age level and developmentally appropriate;
• Standards are free of instructional strategies;
• Standards are based solely on academic content; and
• Standards meet national and international benchmarks.

• Prohibits the Board from implementing the “Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives for Science in West Virginia Schools” and extends current science standards (Sec. 1).

• Establishes an Academic Standards Evaluation Panel for the purpose of reviewing and revising mathematics and English Language Arts education standards (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Board to review and authorize an assessment system for students in grades 3 through 8 in English, reading, writing, and mathematics (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Board to review and authorize a college readiness assessment to be administered to individuals in 11th grade (Sec. 1).

• Establishes provisions that prohibits individuals who opt out of state testing from being punished, disciplined, or receive a grade reduction (Sec. 1).
