Title: Prohibits Employers from Requiring Union Membership

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits employers from requiring union membership as a condition of employment, effective August 10, 2016.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits an employer from requiring an individual to meet the following criteria as a condition of employment or the continuation of employment (Sec. 1):
    • To become or remain a member of a labor organization;
    • To pay dues, fees, assessments, or other sums of money to a labor organization; or
    • To pay to a charity or other third party an amount equivalent to the dues, fees, assessments, or other charges in lieu of payments to a labor organization. 
  • Requires an individual who directly or indirectly violates these provisions to pay a fine of no more than $1000, be imprisoned in the county jail for no more than 90 days, or both a fine and imprisonment for each offense (Sec. 1).
