Title: Prohibits Certain Abortion Procedures

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits a medical professional from performing a "dismemberment abortion" procedure.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits a medical professional from performing a “dismemberment abortion,” unless in reasonable medical judgement 1 of the following criteria is determined (Sec. 1).
    • The abortion is necessary to preserve the life of the pregnant woman; or
    • The abortion is necessary to prevent substantial and irreversible damage, not including psychological or emotional conditions, to the pregnant woman.
  • Defines “dismemberment abortion” as the dismemberment of a fetus, except in cases of miscarriage, and extracting the fetus 1 piece at a time from the uterus using certain tools such as clamps, grasping forceps, tongs, scissors or similar instruments (Sec. 1).
  • Establishes penalties for a violation of this bill including, but not limited to, the loss of professional license, as determined by the applicable licensure board (Sec. 1).
  • Specifies that the provisions of this bill do not prohibit abortion by any other method for any reason including rape and incest (Sec. 1).

 

NOTE: A SIMPLE MAJORITY IS REQUIRED TO OVERRIDE A GOVERNOR'S VETO.
