Vote to pass a bill that prohibits an employer from paying wages to an employee at a rate less than an employee of the opposite sex, or an employee of a different race or national origin for equivalent work, except in certain circumstances.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits an employer from paying wages to an employee at a rate less than the rate paid to an employee of the opposite sex, or an employee of  a different race or national origin for equivalent work (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes an employer to pay an employee a different rate of compensation if any of the following systems are in place (Sec. 1):
    • A system of seniority or merit;
    • A system that measures earnings by quality or quantity of production;
    • A system based on geographic differentials; or
    • A system based on factors other than sex, race or national origin such as education, training, or experience.
  • Establishes penalties for an employer that engages in “discriminatory practices” in violation of the provisions of this bill (Sec. 1).
