Title: Requires Marrying Couples to Sign a Marriage Contract

Vote to pass a bill that requires a marrying couple to enter into a marriage contract, effective July 1, 2015.

Highlights:

  • Requires a couple that is authorized to be married to enter into a contract of marriage (Sec. 1).  
  • Repeals the requirement to attain a marriage license issued by the judge of probate to be married (Sec. 1). 
  • Requires a marriage contract to contain the following information (Sec. 1):
    • The names and signatures of the individuals;
    • A statement that the individuals are authorized to be married;
    • A statement that the individuals voluntarily and of their own freewill enter into a marriage; and 
    • The presence of 2 witnesses.
  • Requires a couple entering into a marriage contract to pay all fees specified in the bill, including but not limited to the following fees (Sec. 2):
    • $25 for the first 2 pages of a contract of marriage; and
    • $2 for each additional page of a contract of marriage.
