Title: Limits Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Purchases

Vote to pass a bill that limits the types of foods individuals receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are able to purchase.

Highlights:

  • Requires an individual to use at least 67 percent of his or her monthly SNAP benefits to purchase certain items, including but not limited to, the following items (Sec. 2):
    • Food items on the Department of Health Services list regardless of brand, size, or packaging;
    • Food items of beef, pork, chicken, and fish; and
    • All types of dairy.
  • Prohibits an individual from using SNAP benefits to purchase crab, lobster, shrimp, or any other shellfish (Sec. 2).
  • Requires the department to publish a list of foods for which a recipient must use at least 67 percent of the benefits amount they receive in a month (Sec.2). 
  • Authorizes a retailer or grocer to swipe an individual’s benefit card before scanning any items to be purchased (Sec. 2).
