Vote to pass a bill that increases the fines for the failure to wear a seat belt while operating or riding in a vehicle, effective January 1, 2016.

Highlights:

  • Increases the fines for an individual’s failure to wear a seat belt while operating or riding in a vehicle to the following amounts (Sec. 1):
    • From $10 to $25 for a first violation;
    • From $20 to $50 for a second or subsequent violation; and
    • From $20 to $25 for any violation if the individual is 16 or 17 years old.
  • Appropriates 60 percent of the revenues collected from seat belt violation fines to the state general fund for any purpose (Sec. 1).
  • Appropriates 40 percent of the revenues collected from seat belt violation fines to the state general fund for use by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist eligible individuals with disabilities who have been severely injured in a vehicle accident (Sec. 1).
