Title: Requires Snow Tires or Chains on Vehicles

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires motor vehicles to have snow tires or tire chains when traveling on Interstate 70.

Highlights:

  • Requires an individual driving a motor vehicle on Interstate 70 anywhere between mileposts 133 and 259 during the annual period of November 1 to May 15 to meet at least 1 of the following requirements (Sec. 3):
    • The vehicle has tires that are imprinted by the manufacturer with the mountain-snowflake symbol and a tread depth of at least 1/8 of an inch;

    • The vehicle has tires that are imprinted by the manufacturer with the “M+S” or “M/S” symbol and a tread depth of at least 1/8 of an inch;

    • The vehicle has 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and tires with a tread depth of at least 1/8 of an inch; or

    • The driver carries tire chains or a traction control device within the vehicle at all times.

  • Establishes the following fines for a violation of the provisions of this bill (Sec. 3):

    • $100 with a $32 surcharge; or

    • $500 with a $156 surcharge if the violation causes the closure of a travel lane.

  • Requires the Department of Transportation to notify the public of the vehicle requirements through signs, the department’s travel website, social media, and other appropriate means, beginning September 1, 2015 (Sec. 3).

  • Exempts commercial vehicles from the provisions of this bill (Sec. 3).
