Title: Authorizes Gender Changes on Birth Certificates

Vote to pass a bill that amends the requirements to change an individual's gender identification on their birth certificate.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes the state registrar to issue a new birth certificate with a different gender designation to an individual who was born in Colorado upon receipt of the following (Sec. 1):

    • A written request for a gender change from the individual or from the individual’s legal guardian; and

    • A signed statement from a healthcare provider indicating that the individual has undergone surgical, hormonal, or other treatment for the purpose of gender transition or that the individual has an intersex condition.

  • Authorizes the registrar to contact the medical or mental health provider to verify any statements submitted (Sec. 1).

 

  • Prohibits any markings indicating amendments on the new birth certificate (Sec. 1).

  • Prohibits the registrar from requesting additional information to perform the amendments (Sec. 1).

  • Requires the registrar to seal the original birth certificate and the records relating to the issuance of a new birth certificate unless the individual is under 18 years old (Sec. 1).
