Title: Authorizes Monitoring of Prescription Drugs

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes the monitoring of prescription drugs.

Highlights:

  • Requires a medical practitioner to access and check a patient’s medical history through a central information repository prior to prescribing or authorizing a refill for the following controlled substances if 180 days have elapsed since the previous check (Sec. 2):
    • Opiates, including synthetic and semi-synthetic opiates;
    • Benzodiazepine; and
    • Carisoprodol.
  • Specifies that the requirement to access and check a patient’s medical history on the information repository prior to prescribing or refilling the controlled substances applies until October 31, 2020 (Sec. 2).
  • Authorizes a medical practitioner to disclose a patient’s medical history to the patient (Sec. 2).
  • Exempts a medical practitioner who prescribes the controlled substances to patients in a nursing facility, or for hospice or end-of-life care, from the provisions of this bill (Sec. 2).
