Vote to pass a bill that prohibits employers from requiring employees to join or pay labor organizations, effective January 1, 2016.

Highlights:

• Prohibits an employer from requiring an employee to do any of the following as a condition of employment (Sec. 1):
• To join, refrain from joining, or resign from a labor organization;
• To pay dues or other charges to a labor organization or a third party in place of a labor organization; and
• To be recommended, approved, referred, or cleared by a labor organization.

• Prohibits an employer from deducting any dues or other charges for a labor organization from an employee’s wages without the written authorization of the employee (Sec. 1).

• Requires an employer to post a notice stating that the employer and a labor union are prohibited from requiring an employee to pay any kind of union dues as a condition of employment (Sec. 1).

• Classifies a violation of the provisions of this bill as a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of no more than $1,000, imprisonment of no more than 90 days, or both (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that the provisions of this bill affect only contracts which are created, renewed or extended on or after the effective date of this bill (Sec. 1).

• Exempts certain individuals from the provisions of this bill, including, but not limited to, law enforcement officers and firefighters (Sec. 1).
