Vote to pass a bill that amends the definition of "another" to include a
fetus for the purpose of certain crimes, effective January 1, 2016.

Highlights:

• Amends the definition of “another” to include the term “fetus” for the purpose of certain criminal charges, including first and second degree murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide, and causing or aiding in suicide (Sec. 2). 

• Defines “fetus” as an unborn offspring that is between the embryo stage, which is at the end of the eighth week after conception or implantation, and birth (Sec. 2).

• Exempts certain acts from the provisions of this bill including, but not limited to, the following acts (Sec. 2): 
• Any act committed by the pregnant woman;
• Any act performed by a physician at the request of the pregnant woman or her legal guardian, including, but not limited to, an act that results in the termination of a pregnancy; or
• Any act performed as part of the lawful administration of medication

Vote to pass a bill that expands the definition of "another" to include "viable fetus" for certain crimes, effective January 1, 2016.

Highlights:

• Expands the definition of “another” to include the term “viable fetus” for the purpose of certain criminal charges, including first and second degree murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide, and causing or aiding in suicide (Sec. 2).

• Defines “viable fetus” as a fetus that is implanted in a female uterus and has reached a stage of development such that the fetus is capable of sustained survival outside the uterus (Sec. 2).

• Exempts certain acts from the provisions of this bill, including, but not limited to, the following acts (Sec. 2):
• Any act committed by a pregnant woman;
• Any act committed at the request, direction, or for the benefit of a pregnant woman; or
• Any act performed by a physician or other medical professional in the course of their medical duties, including, but not limited to, an act that results in the termination of a pregnancy.
