Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the confinement of pregnant pigs in certain enclosures.

Highlights:

• Prohibits the confinement of any pregnant pig, kept for the purpose of breeding, in an “enclosure” in a manner that prevents the pig from turning around, lying down, standing up, or fully extending its limbs (Sec. 1).

• Defines “enclosure” as a cage, crate, stall, or other structure used for confinement of an animal, including a “gestation crate” (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that certain activities may be exempt from the provisions of this bill including, but not limited to, the following activities (Sec. 1):
• Medical research involving pigs;
• Examination, testing, treatment, or operation for veterinary purposes;
• Transportation of pigs; or
• State or county fair exhibitions.

• Requires the State Board of Agriculture to develop the rules relating to the confinement provisions of this bill with an effective date of no later than December 31, 2017 (Sec. 1).
