Vote to pass a bill that amends the approval process for charter schools, effective July 1, 2014.

Highlights:
  • Requires the State Department of Education to establish regulations for the information regarding the impact of a proposed charter school used during the application process with the approval of the State Board of Education no later than October 31, 2014 (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes the authority that approves a charter school application to place certain conditions for the approval of the application based on the information regarding the impact of the proposed charter school that include, but are not limited to, the following conditions (Sec. 1):
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on geographic location;
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on programmatic offerings;
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on academic focus; and
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on grade levels served.
  • Authorizes the approving authority to place the certain conditions for the approval of a charter school application based on the impact of the proposed charter school that include, but are not limited to, the following conditions (Sec. 1):
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on geographic location;
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on programmatic offerings;
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on academic focus; and
    • Restrictions or prohibitions on grade levels served.
  • Authorizes the State Board of Education to place or modify the conditions for the approval of a charter school application if the Board if the approving authority (Sec. 1).
  • Prohibits the placement of conditions for approval from being considered disapproval of an application (Sec. 1).
