Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the transportation of dogs in the bed of a pickup truck on interstate highways.

Highlights:

• Prohibits an individual from transporting a dog in the bed of a pickup truck on an interstate highway, unless the dog is transported in a “humane manner” (Sec. 1). 

• Defines “humane manner” as a method that prevents the dog from falling, jumping, or being thrown from the bed of a pickup truck and meets one of the following criteria (Sec. 1): 
• Being physically inside of an enclosed crate that is safely secured to the bed of a pickup truck that provides “adequate” ventilation and provides enough space for the dog to move around;
• Being physically restrained by a “restraint system” that is long enough to allow the dog to move its head above its shoulders while standing and short enough to secure the dog inside the bed of the pickup truck; or
• Being physically enclosed in the bed of a pickup truck that is covered by a ventilated top and provides the dog with enough room to stand up and move around.

• Defines “restraint system” as an apparatus used for the purpose of restricting a dog’s movement without causing harm including, but not limited to, a collar, leash, harness, or rope (Sec. 1).

• Establishes the following fines for violations of this bill (Sec. 1): 
• Up to $150 for unlawful transportation of one dog; and
• Up to $50 for each additional dog unlawfully transported at the same time.
