Title: Prohibits an Employer from Discriminating Against a Victim of Domestic Violence

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits an employer from discriminating against a victim of domestic violence.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits an employer from committing the following acts (Sec. 1): 
    • The refusal of hiring an otherwise qualified individual because he or she is a victim of domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault, or stalking; and 
    • The discharge, demotion, suspension or discrimination with regard to promotion, compensation or other terms, conditions, or privileges of employment against a victim of domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault, or stalking. 
  • Requires the labor commissioner to determine and impose a civil penalty upon any employer who violates the provision of this bill (Sec. 1). 
  • Establishes a committee to study the protection of employees from domestic violence to consist of the following members (Sec. 2):
    • A total of 1 member of the senate, appointed by the president of the senate; and
    • A total of 3 members of the house of representatives, appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.
