Title: Authorizes Traffic Cameras on Long Island

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes Nassau and Suffolk counties to operate photo speed violation monitoring systems in school zones.

Highlights:
  • Authorizes Nassau and Suffolk counties to install “photo speed violation monitoring systems” within school speed zones and operate them during the following times (Sec. 2): 
    • During school hours and student activities at the school;
    • During the 1 hour period before and after school hours; and 
    • During the 30 minute period before and after student activities.
  • Defines “photo speed violation monitoring system” as a vehicle sensor installed to work with a speed measuring device that automatically produces 2 or more recorded images of a vehicle driving above the speed limit (Sec. 2).
  • Prohibits Nassau and Suffolk counties from installing a monitoring system in more than 1 school speed limit zone per school district (Sec. 2).
  • Increases the number of monitoring systems New York City can install from 20 to 140 (Sec. 11).
  • Authorizes Nassau and Suffolk to fine the owner of a vehicle which was recorded by a monitoring system as traveling at a speed more than 10 miles per hour above the posted speed limit (Sec. 2).
  • Establishes a fine of no more than $50 for each speed violation recorded by a monitoring system (Sec. 2).
