Title: Increases the Speed Limit on Certain Highways

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that increases the maximum allowable speed limit on certain highways, effective July 1, 2014.

Highlights:

  •  Increases the maximum allowable speed limits (Sec. 2):
    • From 70 to 75 miles per hour on limited access highways; 
    • From 65 to 70 miles per hour on any other highway outside an urban area of 5,000 or more individuals that has at least 4 lanes divided by a median strip; and
    • From 60 to 65 miles per hour for travel over other roadways under the authority of the Department of Transportation. 
  • Requires the Department of Transportation to determine and declare the safe and advisable minimum speed limit on all highways which are part of the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways and have at least 4 lanes (Sec. 1).
