Title: Increases Sales Tax

Vote to repass a joint resolution, after having concurred with Senate amendments thereto, that submits an amendment to the voters that increases the sales and use tax by .75 percent, effective January 1, 2015.

Highlights:
  • Increases the state sales and use tax by 1 percent for a 10 year period (Sec. A).
  • Appropriates the revenue from the sales and use tax increase to the following funds, to be used for projects related to local roads, bridges, state highways, city transportation systems, and other approved transportation projects (Sec. A):
    • 5 percent to the “County Aid Transportation Fund;”
    • 5 percent to the “Municipal Aid Transportation Fund;” and
    • 90 percent to the “Transportation Safety and Job Creation Fund.”
  • Exempts the retail sale of food from the sales and use tax increase (Sec. A).
  • Prohibits the general assembly, counties, and municipalities from increasing or decreasing the motor vehicle fuel tax, if the sales and use tax increase is in effect (Sec. A).
