Title: Authorizes Individuals Paying School Fees to Determine Allocation of Fees to Student Organizations

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a joint resolution that authorizes individuals paying school fees to the University of Tennessee to determine the allocation of fees to student organizations.

Highlights:
  • Requires the University of Tennessee administration and Board of Trustees to implement an “opt-in” system, in which an individual responsible for paying the University of Tennessee student activity fee can determine the allocation of his or her fees to student organizations.
  • Requires the University of Tennessee administration and Board of Trustees to complete the following actions:
    • To publish a list of programs funded by the portion of the student activity fee allocated to student organizations for student programming;
    • To develop ways to increase transparency and accountability in the process by which student activity fees are allocated to student organizations for student programming; and
    • To ensure a majority of nonstudent representation on the University Programs and Services Fee Board at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus.
  • Authorizes the University of Tennessee to provide each individual responsible for paying the student activity fee with a written statement, acknowledging that a portion of the fee may be allocated to student programming of “controversial or objectionable nature.”
  • Requires the President of the University of Tennessee to report on actions taken in response to this resolution to the chairs of the education committees of the Tennessee Senate and House of Representatives, by January 1, 2015.
