Title: Prohibits Sex-Selective Abortions

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits sex-selective abortions.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits an individual from knowingly performing a “sex-selective abortion” (Sec. 1).
  • Defines “sex-selective abortion” as an abortion that is performed, requested, or sought solely on account of the sex of the fetus (Sec. 1). 
  • Authorizes a parent or grandparent of a fetus aborted by a sex-selective abortion to claim certain forms of relief from the individual who performed the abortion including, but not limited to, the following forms of relief  (Sec. 2):
    • Relief in the form of damages for personal injury and emotional distress; and
    • Relief in the form of an injunction preventing the individual from performing sex-selective abortions.
  • Requires the identity of an individual bringing action under the provisions of this bill, the identity of the woman the sex-selective abortion was performed on, and the identities of the parents and grandparents of the fetus to be confidential (Sec. 2).
  • Requires all hearings related to an action brought under the provisions of this bill to be held in chambers unless all plaintiffs in an action request a hearing in open court (Sec. 2).
