Title: Authorizes the Use of Traffic Cameras on School Buses

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes the use of "automated traffic law enforcement systems" on school buses to enforce traffic violations.

Highlights:
  • Authorizes a municipality or county to enact an ordinance authorizing the use of an “automated traffic law enforcement system” (Sec. 5).
  • Defines “automated traffic law enforcement system” as a sensor system that works with the visual signals of a school bus to produce recorded images of a motor vehicle and the motor vehicle’s license plate if it fails to stop for children entering or exiting the bus (Sec. 5).
  • Establishes the following fines for violations recorded by an automatic traffic law enforcement system (Sec 5):
    • $150 for the first violation; and
    • $500 for each subsequent violation.
  • Requires a county or municipality to issue a written notice of a traffic violation recorded by an automated traffic law enforcement system to the registered vehicle owner (Sec. 5).
  • Specifies that a violation recorded by an automated traffic law enforcement system is not a moving traffic violation (Sec. 5).
  • Authorizes an individual to contest a violation recorded by an automated traffic law enforcement system if the individual is issued a traffic citation by a police officer within one-eighth of a mile and within 15 minutes of the recorded violation (Sec. 5). 
  • Requires a sign to be posted on a school bus equipped with an automated traffic law enforcement system indicating that the bus is being monitored by such a system (Sec. 5).
