Vote to pass a bill that requires large school districts to have an elected superintendent and small districts to have an appointed superintendent, effective January 1, 2016.

Highlights:
  • Requires the superintendent of any school district with attendance below 1,800 students to be appointed by the local school board (Sec. 1).
  • Requires the superintendent of any school district with attendance above 1,800 students to be elected (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes a referendum by voters to determine if a superintendent will be appointed or elected if at least 1,500 or 20 percent of registered and qualified voters within the school district, whichever is less, sign a petition to hold a vote (Sec. 1).
  • Requires the petition to hold a vote on appointing or electing the superintendent to be submitted to the county board of education before January 1, 2014, or within 90 days of approval of this bill, whichever is earlier (Sec. 1).
