Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that establishes a grading system for schools.

Highlights:

• Requires the Board of Education to designate schools with 1 of the following grades, beginning in the 2013-2014 school year (Sec. 1):
• “A” for schools making excellent progress;
• “B” for schools making above average progress;
• “C” for schools making satisfactory progress;
• “D” for schools making less than satisfactory progress; and
• “F” for schools failing to make adequate progress.

• Requires the Board to determine the grade of a school using measures of performance which include, but are not limited to, increases in student achievement in reading, writing, mathematics, science and the reduction in student achievement gaps (Sec. 1).

• Requires the office of the superintendent of public instruction to annually report each school district’s grade to the governor and legislature (Sec. 1). 

• Requires any school district with at least 1 school designated as an "F" school to be considered a “required action district” (Sec. 1). 

• Requires any school district considered a “required action district” to receive state funding to implement a “required action plan” that will achieve significant educational improvements (Sec. 1).
