Vote to pass a bill that establishes the position of Director of the Department of Education, effectively immediately.

Highlights:
  • Establishes the position of Director of the Department of Education, appointed by the governor, to serve as the administrative head and chief executive officer of the department (Sec. 1).
  • Transfers certain rights of authority over school finance, supervision of public schools and state-wide school policies, and assessment from the state Superintendent of Education to the Director of the Department of Education including, but not limited to, the following authorities (Sec. 2):
    • The formation of rules and regulations for effective educational administration;
    • The distribution of necessary reports of the administration to local boards of trustees and local administrators; and
    • The disbursement of federal funds for educational needs.
  • Prohibits the Director of the Department of Education from voting within the state board of education (Sec. 2).
  • Requires the governor to immediately appoint an individual to serve as the interim Director of the Department of Education (Sec. 5).
