Vote to pass a bill that appropriates funding for school district safety and deferred maintenance grants.

Highlights:

• Appropriates $10 million to the superintendent of public institutions to award school district safety and deferred maintenance grants from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015 (Sec. 1).

• Authorizes the superintendent of public institutions to appropriate $25,000 to each eligible school district plus a share of the remaining funds, calculated by average daily membership in the district (Sec. 1).

• Requires a school district to provide matching funds to be eligible for school district safety and deferred maintenance grants (Sec. 1).

• Requires a school district accepting funds to spend at least 50 percent for safety and any remaining funds for deferred maintenance (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that the following expenses are approved safety expenditures by the school districts (Sec. 1):
• The purchase, installation and maintenance of alarms, cameras, electronic door locks, emergency response call buttons, intercom systems, key cards, and metal detectors; and
• Other equipment designed to minimize the potential of a life-threatening crisis and maximize the safety of students and staff.
