Vote to pass a bill that authorizes civil unions, effective May 1, 2013.
Highlights:
- Defines “civil union” as a legal relationship between 2 individuals, who are at least 18 years of age, that provides rights, benefits, and responsibilities comparable to spouses including, but not limited to, the following laws (Secs. 1, 21 & 24):
- Laws regarding private property inheritance;
- Laws regarding adoption;
- Laws regarding emergency and nonemergency medical care decisions;
- Laws regarding medical and life insurance coverage; and
- Laws regarding public assistance benefits.
- Prohibits religious officials or officials of Indian nations from being required to certify civil unions (Sec. 1).
- Authorizes legal relationships that are substantially similar to civil unions, which were validly entered into in another state, to be considered as a civil union in Colorado (Sec. 1).
- Authorizes a partner in a civil union to be considered a dependent, including designation as a dependent for insurance purposes, effective January 1, 2014 (Secs. 1, 7, 27, & 32).
