Title: Expands the Public Safety Officers' Benefits Program
Vote to adopt an amendment to S 3254 that expands the Public Safety Officers' Benefit Program.
- Repeals the limitation that the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) may only provide as much financial assistance to public safety officers injured in the line of duty as has been appropriated.
- Expands the support and counseling program for the families of officers who died in the line of duty to include the families of officers who were catastrophically injured in the line of duty.
- Defines “member of a rescue squad or ambulance crew” as an employee or volunteer member of a rescue squad or ambulance crew, whereas existing law limited it to a public employee.
- Repeals the limit that total annual benefits paid to safety officers injured in the line of duty cannot exceed $5 million.
