Vote to concur with Senate amendments and pass a bill that encourages state universities to develop and adopt tenure policies that encourage and reward service in the community.
Highlights:
- Encourages universities in the California State University and the University of California systems to include a service component in the review for retention, tenure, and promotion policies before the end of the 2017-2018 academic year (Sec. 2).
- Encourages universities in the California State University and the University of California systems to develop and distribute transparent criteria for tenure which include service as a criterion (Sec. 2).
- Specifies that certain service contributions may be recognized for purposes of appointment, promotion, retention, and tenure review, including, but not limited to, the following service contributions (Sec. 2):
- Serving on community boards and committees;
- Working in outreach programs developed to promote cultural diversity among students;
- Developing programs for underserved populations;
- Consulting with or addressing student and community organizations; or
- Any other service activities that focus on improving the health and well-being of society.
- Requires a candidate for tenure to document his or her service contributions before these contributions can be used as a basis for a favorable tenure decision (Sec. 2).
