Title: Requires Labels on Foods with Genetically Modified Ingredients
Vote to adopt an amendment to S 3240 that authorizes states to require the labeling of food, beverages, and other edible products that contain genetically engineered ingredients.
- Requires the Commissioner of Food and Drugs and the Secretary of Agriculture to submit a report to Congress detailing the percentage of food and beverages sold in the United States that contain “genetically engineered ingredients.”
- Defines “genetically engineered ingredients” as any ingredient that is derived from or produced by the alteration of an organism at the molecular or cellular level by means that are not possible under natural conditions or processes.
NOTE: THIS LEGISLATION NEEDED A THREE-FIFTHS MAJORITY VOTE TO PASS.
