Title: Increases Minimum Age for Beginning Kindergarten
Vote to pass a bill that gradually increases the minimum age required for kindergarten enrollment.
- Increases the minimum age required for kindergarten enrollment in the following increments, whereas existing law required children to have reached age 5 by December 1 of the school year of enrollment (Sec. 1147):
- Children who are at least 5 years old by November 1, 2013 can enroll for the 2013-2014 school year;
- Children who are at least 5 years old by October 1, 2014 can enroll for the 2014-2015 school year; and
- Children who are at least 5 years old by September 1, 2015 can enroll for the 2015-2016 school year.
- Authorizes a parent or guardian to enroll a child who will turn 5 years old by December 1 of the school year, if the parent or guardian submits a letter of intention to the school district no later than June 1 before the school year begins (Sec. 1147).
