Title: Prohibits Discrimination Against Unemployed Workers
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits discrimination by employers against unemployed job applicants.
- Prohibits employers from excluding applicants from consideration or the hiring process on the basis of the applicant's employment status (Sec. 1).
- Defines “employer” as the state, subdivision of the state, agent, or any person that employs or exercises control over the wages, hours, or working conditions of another individual (Sec. 1).
- Establishes the following penalties for employers who violate the provisions of this bill (Sec. 1):
- $1,000 for the first violation;
- $5,000 for the second violation; and
- $10,000 for each following violation.
- Authorizes employers, agencies, and Internet websites to do the following (Sec. 1):
- Obtain information regarding an individual's employment;
- Know an individual's employment status;
- Consider an individual's employment history; and
- Refuse employment due to underlying reasons for an individual's employment status.
