Title: Reduces the Number of Members in the General Assembly
Vote to pass a bill that submits a constitutional amendment to the voters that reduces the number of members in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
- Reduces the number of senatorial districts from 50 to 38 (Sec. 1).
- Reduces the number of representative districts from 203 to 153 (Sec. 1).
- Specifies that each senatorial district shall elect 1 senator and each representative district shall elect 1 representative (Sec. 1).
- Requires districts to be as equal as possible in terms of population (Sec. 1).
- Specifies that upon ratification by the electors, the new size of the General Assembly will go into effect during the first session of the General Assembly following the 2020 Census (Sec. 3).
NOTE: AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION IS A THREE-STEP PROCESS. FIRST, IT REQUIRES APPROVAL OF A MAJORITY IN BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE. SECOND, FOLLOWING AN ELECTION YEAR IT REQUIRES ANOTHER MAJORITY VOTE BY THE NEXT GENERAL ASSEMBLY, AND THIRD, APPROVAL BY THE VOTERS DURING A GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION.
