Title: Prohibits Food with Trans Fat in Schools

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits industrially produced trans fat in food and beverages provided to students in public schools and charter schools, effective September 1, 2013.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits public schools and charter schools from providing or producing on school grounds any food or beverages with “industrially produced trans fat” for student consumption including, but not limited to, food and beverages available in a school cafeteria, school store, or vending machine (Secs. 2 & 3).
  • Defines “industrially produced trans fat” as vegetable shortening, margarine, or any type of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil that contains more than 0 grams of trans fat per serving (Secs. 2 & 3).
  • Exempts from the provisions of this act any food or beverage made by a meal program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture or that is a part of a fundraising effort conducted by one or more students, parents, or teachers (Secs. 2 & 3).
  • Appropriates $6,800 for consulting services of the federal nutrition program in order to implement this act (Sec. 4).
