Title: Requires Reimbursement of the Full Cost of Ultrasounds Required Prior to Abortions
Vote to adopt an amendment to HB 1301 that requires health insurers to cover transabdominal ultrasound imaging prior to an abortion.
- Requires health insurers to include patient coverage for transabdominal ultrasound imaging for the purpose of determining gestational age prior to an abortion procedure.
- Exempts the following types of insurance policies from the provisions of this bill:
- Short-term travel;
- Accident only;
- Limited or specific disease;
- Individual conversion policies or contracts; and
- Medicare policies or similar state or federal government plans.
- Requires insurance coverage for transabdominal ultrasound imaging to apply to state employees, local government employees, local officers, teachers, retirees, and the dependents of these employees.
- Appropriates $3.1 million to fund ultrasound imaging for uninsured Virginians, to be distributed by the Secretary of Health and Human Resources.
- Prohibits payment or reimbursement to facilities that perform 5 or more first trimester abortions per month, with the exception of academic medical centers and inpatient hospitals.
