Title: Authorizes Professionals to Teach Certain High School Courses

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes professionals to teach certain high school courses.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes the licensing of applicants with professional employment experience to teach science, math, engineering, or technology courses for grades 9 through 12 (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes an applicant who has not graduated from an approved teaching program to be eligible for employment as a teacher if he or she meets all of the following criteria (Sec.1):
    • Has a bachelor’s degree in science, math, engineering, or technology from an accredited post-secondary institution;
    • Has at least 6000 hours of “successful, recent, and relevant” employment experience in a profession related to the applicant's field of study;
    • Has completed at least 1 semester credit hour of an online teaching course at the University of Northern Iowa; and
    • Has passed the Praxis II subject matter test on the topic the applicant will teach.
