Title: Reduces Prison Sentences for Inmates Seeking Education
Vote to pass a bill that authorizes inmates to receive a deduction in their prison terms if they earn a certain educational diploma or certification, effective October 1, 2012.
- Authorizes inmates to receive a deduction of 60 days from their term of confinement if they earn a (Sec. 1):
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- 2 or 4-year college degree;
- 2 or 4-year certification in applied sciences;
- Technical education diploma; or
- Certificate of completion of a civics education program that requires passing a final examination.
- Specifies that this law does not apply for inmates convicted of first or second-degree murder (Sec. 1).
