Title: Amends Requirements for Ballot Measures for Future Tax Increases
Vote to pass a resolution that submits a constitutional amendment to the voters that amends the requirements for ballot measures involving taxes.
- Requires an affirmative vote from at least 60 percent of qualified voters for any initiative, referendum, or proposed amendment to the constitution that involves the following issues (Sec. 1):
- A new tax;
- An increase in the existing tax rates;
- A reduction or elimination of an existing tax deduction; or
- The authorization of certain entities to collect or levy taxes.
NOTE: AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION REQUIRES MAJORITY APPROVAL IN EACH CHAMBER FOR PASSAGE. AN AMENDMENT MAY ALSO BE PROPOSED BY INITIATIVE PETITION. IT MUST THEN BE APPROVED BY A MAJORITY OF CITIZENS VOTING IN THE NEXT ELECTION TO BECOME ENACTED.
